I've had this book on my shelf for three years (and tbh, I've had some books on my shelf unread much longer), I may try to read it before watching or may cave and watch.

I like in media res when its used like it sounds like its used here,. Bad in media res is typically shows a scene and then cut to some time period earlier and tell an otherwise linear story. There are exceptions (Sunset Boulevard) Good versions typically cut back and forth and give us some insight into the character's end point. Vonnegut's novels are often structured this way.

I was curious if this was a tough first episode for non-book readers (I read it and love love loved it). Between all the characters, the time skipping, and dense layered story/satire I honestly had to watch it twice to fully appreciate it, already being familiar with the source material. I know RDJ was involved with getting the rights to this and then producing, and as expected cast in the show, I do wonder how hard they were leaning on his star power in case the true lead didn't land. I get him playing a bunch of Americans is an inversion of an old stereotype but I pray it doesn't overwhelm the show or become a gimmick. Hoa Xuande has more than enough charisma and (apparently relatively new) chops to anchor this series around. They say acting is in the eyes, and he's been captivating so far. Once The Captain enters the next phase of his story I feel like the show will really hit its stride. Thanks for covering this, I'm going to enjoy this ride.

Great review, but you for got the biggest name of all in the credits: Canadian screen legend Don McKellar.

It's all new to me as I knew nothing about the book and, like you, couldn't resist all the names involved.

Your Donny Most and Paul McCrane shout-outs made me laugh as you truly nailed it. I had a difficult time with RDJ's over the top performance in this first episode, and I hope future roles are less big/annoying. Props to hair and make-up though.
