People love pairs! I do think, though, that the need to televisualize the story led to a much more obvious pairing—in the books, we meet Elle for the first time and are immediately told by the characters that they have an unspoken crush on each other, but because neither were huge characters up to that point it doesn't feel as structural as it does here.
Well, so much for steering around every obvious complication. But I guess the show has to have some conflict.
It looks like Tao and Elle are heading for a romance. That's fine, but I kind of wish they'd resist the urge to pair everyone off.
