A much-needed dose of honest communication softens the horror of a drug trip from hell
Those journals of Shauna’s really have gotten her into a lot of trouble, haven’t they? When Jackie read them in the wilderness, she found out her best friend and boyfriend lost their virginities to each other, leading her on a mission of misdirected chaos and revenge. Years later, Jeff read the journals—and now, when he takes them again as part of a blackmail scheme to save his dying furniture store, it leads Shauna to suspect, and kill, the wrong man. Maybe just keeping the memories in your head would’ve been safer, Shauna! They’re clearly not going anywhere.
Shauna’s journals are yet another example of a motif present in both timelines, effectively tying the two halves of this story together. Both stories are approaching separate climaxes now, but here we have a convergence: Shauna’s most horrifying memories, the same moments we’ve been watching play out, packaged into little volumes and still in her possession decades later, causing her problems.
