Review: Yellowjackets, “Blood Hive” | Season 1, Episode 5
What’s scarier: a séance at a cabin in the middle of the wilderness, or dealing with a pregnancy there?
Up to this point in Yellowjackets’s run, its supernatural elements have been confined to a few mysterious clues: a recurring symbol on tree trunks and cabin floors, a few apparent hallucinations in past and present, and a general air of eeriness and dread. But the longer the show only vaguely addresses those elements, the more it risks becoming frustrating. That’s why it’s a wise choice to have the characters themselves discuss those ambiguities rather than just leaving us to speculate.
Of course, “Blood Hive” still doesn’t confirm everything—or anything—one way or the other. But it does begin the work of integrating supernatural horror into the main storyline, primarily through that age-old horror trope: a séance, a séance held at a cabin in the woods, in fact.
It’s a thrilling scene that ratchets up the tension going forward and assures us that we won’t have to wait years for the idea of a supernatural threat to even occur to the team. And it builds slowly and effe…
