Review: What We Do in the Shadows, “March Madness” | Season 6, Episode 7
Sean is miserable, and it’s a mystery to Laszlo
Even though industry awards don’t really matter, it’s still nice whenever What We Do in the Shadows picks up a few nominations outside the technical categories—like the six noms the show has gotten so far for writing, and the three for Outstanding Comedy Series. It especially made me happy earlier this year when Matt Berry picked up his first-ever Emmy nomination. He lost, of course. (Shadows has only ever won one Emmy, for costuming.) But I’m still glad the Academy has recognized what Berry has been doing on this show, which goes beyond saying ordinary words in funny ways. Maybe he’s not as intense as Jeremy Allen White in The Bear. But Berry’s Laszlo is—for a soulless vampire—pretty damned soulful.
On the whole, “March Madness” is one of the lesser Shadows episodes from this season, although Season 6 has been so good that even this relatively weak 22 minutes is still pretty strong. A lot of the credit for making this episode seem meaningful belongs to Berry. (Well, …
