Review: What We Do In The Shadows, "The Grand Opening" | Season 4, Episode 3
The vampires’ wishes come true, but not quite in the ways they’d hoped
Nadja had a simple dream, like so many monsters before her. What if she ran a vampire nightclub… y’know, like in the motion picture Blade? With blood sprinklers and wraith bouncers and Coors Light and maybe even a rare performance by the reclusive, eccentric, superstar vampire rapper Richie Suck? So she got all dressed up in her club-crawler finest — two little red hats! — for the first night of her new nightspot, humbly dubbed “Nadja’s.” And what does she get for her troubles? Not so much Blade. More Love & Mercy.
What’s that? You don’t remember the 2015 movie Love & Mercy, where John Cusack played the troubled Beach Boys singer-songwriter-producer-genius Brian Wilson and Paul Giamatti played his hyper-controlling medical and spiritual adviser Dr. Eugene Landy? Well don’t sweat it because Sam Johnson and Chris Marcil — the credited writers of tonight’s What We Do in the Shadows episode “The Grand Opening” — capture the gist of it in the twisted dynamic between the tortured Richie Suck (Affion Crockett) and his familiar/handler/DJ “Dr.” Tom Schmidt (Fred Armisen).
