Review: The White Lotus, “The Meaning of Dreams” | Season 3, Episode 3
The search for inner peace animates another setup episode
Not long into “The Meaning of Dreams,” Lochlan shows his dad some footage of a tsunami that happened just one beach over. He’s fascinated by the image of one solitary man facing the waves, letting them inevitably sweep him away. “He didn’t even run,” Lochy says. “He just stood there.”
It’s obvious what this metaphor means in relation to Tim: he’s a version of that man on the beach, helpless to the brewing storm that will surely overtake him. He has no options, really, while he waits for his lawyer to keep him updated; all he can do is stand still and stay silent, doing his best to pretend nothing is wrong. But maybe he’s also envious of that man in the footage, of his serenity and confidence in the face of certain doom. How can someone get to that place?
Season three is still in the setup phase when it comes to its big storylines, including getting most of the characters in place for a party on Greg’s yacht next week. This episode, more than the first two, …
