Back in the 90s, at one of the jobs we worked while I was in grad school, Noel and I had a co-worker named Tommy Tomlin. Tommy was a good ol’ boy from rural Virginia with a heart condition and no understanding of how computers worked. He was the life of the party, and his favorite jokes were practical ones. Tommy would come to you with a straight face and a sob story. “You’ll never believe what happened,” he’d say, and spin some improbable yarn. If you showed skepticism, he would hand-to-God insist that it was true, pressing and pressing and pressing. Until the moment you took him at his word. “Gotcha!” he’d roar. “I’m just messing with ya!”
Practical jokes are, it’s safe to say, our family's most despised form of social interaction. Especially the way Tommy did it.
