Is it safe for the Democratic Party to make a U-turn? The devil on Diane’s shoulder gives her hope
I early-voted on Wednesday, with Noel and our college-senior son. Then we fired up the screener of this week’s episode and saw the title. “Well, that’s ominous,” I typed in my notes document. What horrors of the end of the American experiment would be visited on us in the next hour? As much as I love this show, as much as its bracing candor and bold absurdity feel essential for this moment in history, I am not excited about marinating in doom.
But the “End of Democracy” named in the title isn’t so much a crumbling and disintegration, as an invitation to Just Walk Out. Neil Gross, ChumHum megabillionaire, proposes to buy out the institutions that are running the country into the ground, from the actively-malevolent Fox News to the merely ineffectual Democratic National Committee, and usher in a new era of effective government.
