Review: The Curse, “Questa Lane” | Season 1, Episode 3
The Siegels’ lies begin to fall apart, but performativity continues to reign supreme
I’m going to be using the word “performative” a lot in these reviews, I’m beginning to realize. I suppose that’s unavoidable when talking about a show so fixated on how people try to prove their essential goodness, both in everyday situations with a spouse and publicly, on a national scale. Performativity runs through every aspect of The Curse.
After last week’s episode largely eschewed plot in favor of weird, self-contained storytelling, “Questa Lane” gets back to the ongoing stories established by the premiere. We’re still waiting to hear about whether Flipanthropy will get picked up, but it’s top of mind for everyone now, with so much riding on the show’s success. I liked “Pressure’s Looking Good So Far,” especially for what it had to say about the characters, but its pace was leisurely, and the stories more interesting than high-stakes.
