Review: The Curse, “It’s a Good Day” | Season 1, Episode 5
A return to the show-within-the-show brings a dose of workplace-comedy vibes
Emma Stone is really killing it in this show, isn’t she? At the beginning of The Curse, I was most struck by Nathan Fielder’s performance, just because it’s so new; we’re used to seeing him as a version of himself, but now he’s playing a proper character. Stone’s performance, while equal to or better than his, wasn’t as surprising to me. But the more this show goes on, the more I find myself fixating on Stone anyway. I always had a feeling she could do something like this, but it’s still pretty impressive to witness in real time.
She’s particularly crucial to an episode like “It’s a Good Day,” where Whitney’s ability to shove down her inner turmoil and keep up her charming-host image is tested like never before. With Flipanthropy back in production, this is an episode that feels a little bit more like a traditional workplace comedy, or a cheeky parody of a typical HGTV show.
