Review: Shrinking, "Potatoes" | Season 1, Episode 4
Jimmy may be a widow, but he's still a dad with a teenage daughter, and that's its own thing too
While I promise that not every review of Shrinking is going to be about its dramedic balance, “Potatoes” features the most sitcom-y plot to date, which makes it hard not to muse on the subject.
While Jimmy may be a widow struggling to confront his grief over his wife’s death and parent his teenage daughter, he is still also the father of a teenage daughter, which means he’s simultaneously dealing with the normal, run-of-the-mill conflicts that come with being a parent. One of these is having to face the fact that his daughter is a person who has had sex, a detail that Alice shares with Gaby in a hang session. And ultimately it’s Gaby who encourages Alice to give Jimmy a chance to be a progressive, sex-positive parent and tell him that she had sex with Liz’s son Connor before he went off to college. And it…well, it goes like you’d expect it to go in a sitcom.
Ultimately, there’s no significant harm done in Jimmy’s overreaction in terms of the characters directly involved:…
