Review: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, "The Retreat" | Season 1, Episode 7
Jen's identity issues come fully into focus, just in time for...whatever Marvel has planned for her
At the beginning of last week’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Jen joked about it being a self-contained wedding episode, and noted that it was thematically appropriate for a wedding to be taking place at an inconvenient time. However, unlike most of the Marvel shows thus far, it’s not as though She-Hulk has had an extremely clear narrative arc where we could say momentum was actively being interrupted. Sure, it came in the immediate aftermath of a Daredevil tease, but I wouldn’t have said that we had any reason to expect last week’s sixth episode was going to be a real barnburner.
The six-episode MCU seasons have had arcs closer to films, where the stakes are firmly established early on, and then play out naturally as the season progresses. Wandavision, the only other MCU show to run for nine episodes, had a built-in mystery and a growing sense that things were heading off the rails, which She-Hulk has avoided by comparison.
