Review: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, "Is This Not Real Magic?" | Season 1, Episode 4
Jen dabbles in dating while dealing with a magician dabbling in the mystic arts
A week after delivering a very typical episode of a legal show, complete with both an A-story and a B-story, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law seems to acknowledge in “Is this Not Real Magic?” that it can’t really sustain this every week with its short 30-minute runtimes. Or, rather, it can’t sustain this if it is also going to engage in other natural forms of storytelling for its character and situation.
We have a clear A-story here, with Wong returning to Jen’s office with a case: the cut-rate magician who opens the episode is actually a former student of the mystic arts who flunked out, and is being pushed to embrace his training to spice up his act. It results in a drunk woman traveling inter-dimensionally, encountering a goat demon named Jake before eventually ending up in Wong’s apartment to spoil The Sopranos. There’s a (silly) courtroom scene, sure, but this is a much clearer effort to “superhero” up the environment, as Jen is called in to help fend off the demons th…
