Review: Secret Invasion, "Beloved" | Season 1, Episode 4
An explosive episode spices up an uneven series
Welcome back to Secret Invasion – the show where everything’s made up and the deaths don’t matter. Unless of course, they do. But given that “Beloved” starts by reversing last week’s shocking main character death and ends by delivering another shocking main character death, it’s hard to know exactly how much to emotionally invest at this point. Literally three of this show’s four episodes have ended with Gravik dramatically killing a major character, so the impact of that particular twist is starting to wear off. And while losing Ben Mendelsohn at this point in the series feels like it’d be a mistake, given that he’s consistently the best thing about it, I’m not sure miraculously bringing Talos back to life is any better.
That’s for next week’s episode to decide, however. For now, I’ll give “Beloved” credit for being the most exciting episode of Secret Invasion to date. There are still major foundational problems here. But there are also scenes that hint at what a …
