Review: Only Murders in the Building, "Two For The Road" | Season 4, Episode 3
The stars are back and the balance is a problem (Hey-la-day-la)
I have a personal policy that even if I have screeners for an entire season—or, in this case, seven episodes—I don’t watch them in advance. I’m open to the argument that the opposite is an equally justified policy, and that knowing where a season is going can help a reviewer articulate their criticism more carefully, but in the end my biggest concern is aligning my perspective with that of my readers. We won’t always agree on how a season of television is progressing, but we have the same data to support our positions, and the conversation is better for it.
It does mean, though, that the pre-air reviews of Only Murders in the Building season four you may have read—I skipped them—have poisoned the well a bit on the central tension observable in these opening episodes. The show has never had a shortage of big guest stars, but they’ve usually been integrated into the fabric of the show and the investigation, and the same is not true of the three stars who spend this week’s epis…
