Review: Masters of the Air, "Part Three" | Season 1, Episode 3
Time for some stormy weather.
“Surrender? Or escape?”
You know, it feels like only last week that I said something to the effect that “not having detailed knowledge about each man’s history means it’s hard to know for sure if Cleven, Egan, and Biddick will survive the entire war,” in relation to the two-episode premiere of Masters of the Air. Now, it feels like I said that last week because…well, I did say that in last week’s review. As “Part Three” makes clear, I wound up having a pretty good reason to muse about that lack of knowledge, but it was nothing less than a very good guess on my part. (As a reminder, I promise I’m watching these one episode at a time. I’ve just got a good case of ESP, let’s say.)
Although neither Cleven nor Egan are 100 percent certain of the whereabouts of Curt Biddick by the end of “Part Three,” we sadly are. In the opening episodes, we saw Biddick manage to avoid a deadly crash-landing, instead winding up with some friendly folks on the coast of Scotland. And earlier in this very episode, we watch some of the men of the 100th Bomb Group, led by Lt. Roy Frank Claytor (Sawyer Spielberg), successfully bail out of a plane that’s going down fast. But luck didn’t strike once more for Biddick. No, even though Biddick attempts to steer his downed plane while also trying to save the life of his co-pilot into a lengthy open field, the attempt is thwarted by some highly placed tree cover and the plane blows up midway through the episode. And so, we bid adieu to the immensely talented Barry Keoghan, who’s off to deal with that burgeoning film career of his, I’m sure.
