A brutal brawl recaptures the bloody fun of the Netflix Defenders universe
One of the more interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits to emerge from Disney’s She-Hulk series is that the big Bruce-Banner-led premiere about how Jennifer Walters got her powers was originally supposed to air as the penultimate episode of the season—only after we got to know Jen and her quirky world on their own terms. And while showrunner Jessica Gao claimed the change was mostly about getting to know Jen’s backstory sooner, it’s not hard to imagine that Marvel panicked about introducing its new Hulk-ed out female lead without her more famous cousin front and center. Thus we got a She-Hulk premiere filled with sloppily rushed CGI and a tone that didn’t at all match what the series was going to be like week-to-week.
You have to wonder if history is repeating itself with Echo, given how much this season’s cameo-heavy premiere feels so tonally distinct and slapdash compared to the more confident episodes that have followed. It’s easy to imagine a v…
