Review: Curb Your Enthusiasm, “The Dream Scheme” | Season 12, Episode 7
A fun rivalry between Larry David and Freddy Funkhouser offsets an uninspired subplot
I’ve always found comedies like Curb Your Enthusiasm more difficult to review than other genres. In many ways, there’s far less to analyze or critique than in other shows I’ve covered for this site, like The White Lotus or Yellowjackets, because it isn’t much interested in character development or serialized plotting in general. So much of the success of an episode hinges on personal taste and humor. It’s like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in that way—and I’ve always admired people like Dennis Perkins who can review It’s Always Sunny on an episodic basis.
Of course, there’s always something to talk about with any given episode of this show, and I haven’t struggled too much. But there’s a relatively narrow range of quality within a given season of this show, especially now. Almost every episode this season has been decent, with a couple slightly better than decent and a couple slightly worse. And “The Dream Scheme” is another perfectly fine one, mostly.…
