Review: Abbott Elementary, “Mother’s Day” | Season 3, Episode 12
IT IS YOUR MOTHER’S DAY
The eponymous Mother’s Day plot in this week’s Abbott Elementary is about as standard as it gets for the series. Instead of Janine’s tunnel vision, we get Barbara’s more seasoned tunnel vision, with a reluctant Gregory going along with the ride—until it all becomes too much and then Barbara has to learn a lesson about boundaries. After an episode of anything but a well-adjusted Gregory, there is no “gotcha” moment in “Mother’s Day” revealing that Gregory is holding back some deep emotional trauma and baggage. In fact, Gregory has actually processed losing his mother at age nine quite healthily and still actively celebrates her memory without needing to make a whole spectacle of it. The lesson for Barbara is that some people do things differently…and also that she should relax and allow others to take care of her on Mother’s Day. There are a couple of lessons for Barbara this week.
Last week’s “Double Date” was obviously the peak of cringe comedy on Abbott Element…
