I think people are reading Jason wrong. I don't think his actions are explained by his not caring about winning*; I think they are explained by his caring too much. The pattern is pretty clear to me: As soon as he feels like he has gotten behind in a task he steers hard into the skid and tries to fail in the most spectacular manner possible. Now the water task flub doesn't quite fit that pattern and maybe that one was just boneheadedness. But I think that "Just eyeball it" was another strategy for making sure that if somehow he did fail it was in a "cool", IDGAF way.

Maybe my armchair psychologizing is wrong. By way of supporting it I'll just say that I am very familiar with having the sort of ego that demands that you either win or if you can't win then you look like you don't care about winning. And while I can sympathize with Jason walking around with that demon, I have to say it's making me pretty frustrated with him as a contestant. The continual self-sabotage just isn't that entertaining.

Otherwise it was a fun episode. During Matthew's yogurt task I found myself echoing the dean from Community: "I hope this doesn't awaken anything in me." I don't think it did, but I bet not everyone who watched can say that.

* Not necessarily winning outright, but doing well and playing competitively.

In the moment, Matt’s approach to the yogurt task seemed bold in its baseness - it was gross, but no grosser than Romesh and the watermelon back in the day for me. However, in the days after, I feel more icked out by it - which was the point, perhaps?

Overall, I’m enjoying Matt and Jason sitting next to each other and watching their reactions to each other. I feel like there’s some sort of article/thread that could be written about the seating arrangements over the series.
