In “Je Yeon,” there’s a really charming scene in the midst of a very emotionally charged situation. Jin has just learned that Sun had an affair, news that has threatened their rebuilt connection following years of tension. It’s difficult for Jin to reconcile, which is part of why he jumps at the opportunity to walk away from a confrontation with Sun when Bernard ambles up hoping that he was planning to take the boat out to go fishing.
Bernard is a Lost character who only shows up when the story needs him to, disappearing for long stretches when the writers don’t really have a reason for him to be around. Sometimes they need another gun for a shootout, with the added bonus of an extra bit of emotional resonance with Rose knowing her man is in danger; other times, it’s the realization that there’s literally no one else on the island who’s married, which means that if Jin needs some counseling there’s only one man with the first-hand e…
